Why heat treatment for aluminum alloy parts processing? We know that many Aluminum Castings meet the performance requirements under casting conditions and do not require further processing. However, in order to improve performance and increase strength and ductility, aluminum castings, aluminum alloy parts are usually processed by a series of heating and cooling cycles called heat treatment. This heat treatment involves three basic operations: solution, quenching and age. Solution treatment involves heating the casting to a temperature close to eutectic to dissolve eutectic components and form a solid homogeneous solution.

After this solution treatment, the castings can be quenched or quickly cooled, usually in boiling water, which helps to maintain a homogeneous solution at room temperature. The third step for heat treatment of aluminum castings is natural or artificial aging, which increases strength and hardness. The aging hardening principle can also be used to tailor heat treatment for each application. The combination of these three heat treatments is called mildness. The main purpose of heat treatment of aluminum castings is to develop the best combination of mechanical properties that meet the critical needs of component applications.

The three basic thermal operations are often combined into heat treatment cycles that offer a variety of properties. Although books on aluminum casting provide "typical" or "recommended" solutions for quenching and aging times and temperatures for each alloy and tempering, these heat treatment cycles are often variable and manipulated to alter the mechanical properties of castings to meet specific component requirements for strength and ductility. Recent studies include the use of fluidized beds to quickly reach solution temperatures and provide faster heat treatment cycles.

The benefits of heat treatment for the processing of aluminum castings and aluminum alloy parts include:

• homogenization of alloying elements - this is the element that is evenly distributed throughout the matrix, so the properties of the casting will be uniform;
• Stress relief - residual stress is generated during the cooling of high-temperature casting and solution temperature; Heating the casting to intermediate temperature can reduce these residual stresses;
• Improved dimensional stability and machinability – changes in microstructure can cause castings to grow over time; Tight dimensional tolerances are maintained during and after machining, and castings should be heat treated to form a stable precipitated phase;
• Mechanical Performance Improvement - The greatest use of heat treatment is to enhance mechanical and corrosion properties through spheroidizing constituent phase particles and precipitation hardening.

Rarely in a single casting all the required properties are optimized. More often, heat treatment is a compromise that maximizes the use of other properties. For example, tensile strength and yield strength can be improved, but this results in lower elongation. Conversely, higher elongation results in lower tensile and yield strength.
